"The
Rite Spot # 1" 1998*
Along with "The Rite Spot #2,"
this photo was taken in a restaurant/bar with a 4X5 view
camera and a hand held flash during a Sixth Street Photography
Workshop project called “The Secret San Francisco.”
There were just two of us that night, Tom
Ferentz, the director of the program, and myself. Tom
asked various people if we could take their photograph (something
I feel I would not have been able to do). I worked the camera,
shooting at F8 on bulb. I clicked the shutter open and directed
Tom to pop the flash and then, I closed the shutter. As
crowded as it was, and with a 4x5 nonetheless, I was surprised
how receptive people were; we made about five different
